Personal Statement by Cameran - February 2024 Scholarship Essay

Ever since I was a little girl, I have always imagined myself working in a hospital or in a facility that allows me to take care of people. Growing up I have always been told that I am very hardworking and passionate with everything that I do. Once my last year of middle school came along and it was time to decide what classes we wanted to take our Freshman year, I knew exactly what I was going to write down. I was determined to take every single health/nursing class that was offered at the high school. And with that goal, I succeeded in taking every single medical class that was offered to me. Although I took all of these classes and knew in my head that I wanted to go into nursing, I never understood how much determination it took until taking the Certified Nursing Assistant course this past November. Once taking this course and being able to do hands-on work, I really started to understand what it took to become a nurse. Currently, I am employed at The Landings of Carbondale where I am continuing my work experience in the nursing field. I have learned that it takes a lot to become a CNA. Some days I will come home exhausted, but knowing I put a smile on the residents faces every time I walk into that building is the reason why I love what I do. With my experience and education, that is why I have chosen to pursue a health career.
I have thought over my plans many times, and I believe I have a set plan that will be right for me. With hopes to be accepted into the nursing program at John A. Logan College, I plan on working towards my LPN-RN degree. Once obtaining these degrees, I plan on working at a local hospital as a Registered Nurse while working towards my BSN online at a university. After receiving my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, my goal is to continue to work while going to school to become a Nurse Practitioner, specializing in spinal cord injuries. After these 6 years of school are completed and I am hopefully a Nurse Practitioner, I would like to work at a Veteran Affairs Medical Center. You might ask why I want to work here specifically, and the answer is that I want to help people who have helped me. I want to take care of the people who have fought for me and our country. As of right now, these are the only set plans I have, but maybe after getting more experience, I will open my own practice and continue my nursing career.
This scholarship will enable me to buy my books and other necessities for my nursing classes. Nursing school is pretty expensive, so with this scholarship I would use that money towards those important items.
