The Pursuit of God by Callie - October 2020 Scholarship Essay

"The Pursuit of God" by A.W. Tozer was the best book I read in 2020 because of the way it defied my expectations about it and how timely of a message it was for this year. I fully expected it to be about how people should pursue God and do enough good things to be considered "good enough" people, but instead, the book was about how God is in pursuit of us before we do any good works. It speaks of how He loved us before we loved or knew Him and how He has pursued us throughout history.

"The Pursuit of God" opened my eyes to a broader perspective and gave me language for things I have felt in my soul but have not known how to express. It was especially impactful in 2020 because of what a year it has been, a year where it would be easy to choose to believe that God has forsaken us and no longer cares about us. Yet, "The Pursuit of God" brought into focus the timeless truth of the love God has for us, regardless of our behavior or circumstances. Being an older book, I was pleasantly surprised at how relevant it still was for today's reader.

All of these elements combine to make "The Pursuit of God" the best book I have read in 2020.
