Athletes Helping Athletes: fighting for inclusion by Calli - January 2024 Scholarship Essay
As students flood the stadium, a deafening energy and a sense of unity fill the air. The stands are full of diverse fans bonded by their love for the team. The piercing buzzers, marching bands, and crowds can be overwhelming for those with sensory needs. I have sat on the sidelines at many games with my neurodivergent peers, cheering for our high school sports teams. Being paired with an enthusiastic classmate allows students with special needs to be part of their school community while finding comfort in being accompanied on walks away from the noise by a responsible peer. These peers volunteer to be part of a club called Athletes Helping Athletes (AHA).
Growing AHA at my high school is a source of pride for me. AHA unites athletes with disabilities and teenage volunteers, allowing them to enjoy sporting events as honorary captains. They assist with the coin toss, interact with referees, and exchange handshakes with opposing team captains. Initially, we had one athlete with autism and five volunteers. By the time I graduate, AHA will have engaged over 150 individuals. As president, I have had hundreds of conversations with volunteers, advisors, athletes, and parents. These interactions have taught me the communication skills that I will utilize to drive the change that I want to see in this world: a commitment to inclusion.
