Why I Chose Manufacturing Technology by Caleb - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to working with my hands, taking things apart, figuring out how they work, and putting them back together. I enjoy the process of building, fixing, and creating something tangible. That natural curiosity and satisfaction from hands-on work is what led me to choose Manufacturing Technology with a concentration in Robotics as my major. I wanted a field that matched my learning style and gave me the chance to actively apply what I learn in real time. Manufacturing Technology offers exactly that—a dynamic environment where problem-solving, creativity, and technical skill come together to produce real-world results.

What excites me most about Manufacturing Technology is that it's not a desk-bound career. I prefer to be on my feet, engaging with equipment, tools, and systems rather than sitting through lectures or doing only textbook work. I learn best by doing, and this major is built around practical, applied learning. From using precision machines to working with CAD programs and exploring automation and robotics, I get to be part of processes that power industries around the world. The hands-on training prepares me not only to understand theory but to implement it efficiently and safely on the job.

Another reason I chose this major is the opportunity it brings for a stable and fulfilling career. Manufacturing continues to evolve, especially with the integration of new technologies like automation, CNC machining, and 3D printing. These innovations make the industry exciting and future-focused. As industries grow and demand skilled workers who can adapt and solve problems on the floor, I know I’ll be entering a field where my skills are valued and in demand. The versatility of the training also means I can work in a variety of industries—from aerospace to automotive to electronics—opening up many career paths.

Most importantly, I enjoy the sense of accomplishment that comes with manufacturing work. At the end of the day, there is something incredibly rewarding about being able to point to something and say, “I helped make that.” Whether it’s a custom-machined part or a fully assembled product, it feels good to know I contributed to building something useful. Manufacturing Technology gives me the tools and knowledge to do meaningful work and grow within an industry I genuinely enjoy.

Choosing Manufacturing Technology was more than just selecting a major—it was choosing a lifestyle that fits how I think, learn, and work. It’s a field that allows me to stay active, be hands-on, and continue learning through experience. I’m confident that this path will lead to a career that challenges and excites me for years to come.
