My voice. by Caleb - September 2023 Scholarship Essay

Imagine having the power to change your school in the way you deem necessary. I don’t know about you, but if I had that privilege I wouldn’t hesitate to put it to use. With this ability, I would improve areas of my school that I think need tending to or slight changes. A few of the many things I would improve about my school include our school restrooms; which are outdated, activities for students, and the restrictions placed on students.
I can not stress enough how important it is for there to be access to restroom facilities for students. Although my school has plenty of restrooms most of the restrooms are closed. This limits the access of restrooms to students and leads to them having to go all the way across the building to get to the nearest restroom. I, myself have been a victim of this, there have been many times when I had to search the building to find a bathroom that is open and not full. Not only are a majority of the bathrooms closed many of the appliances in the restrooms are broken and don't work properly, and the bathrooms are tight-spaced leaving students with little privacy. If I had the opportunity I would focus on fixing up the restrooms as well as, see if there is a chance of making more space in the restrooms. With these improvements, students won’t have to search the building for available restrooms, and will have more privacy in the restroom, and won’t feel so congested.
Another change I would make would be the amount of activities for students and even staff. At my school, I feel like there aren’t enough activities placed so that students and staff can enjoy themselves and be more motivated for school. I’m sure the amount of activities available isn’t because of my school but because of their budget, and if I was given the funds to support more activities I would execute that. I feel like when schools have activities going on it gives attendees something to look forward to. It makes their day or week more enjoyable and exciting. I believe that having more activities would make students’ high school experience more memorable.
Lastly, I would change the restrictions placed on students of my school. At my school students aren’t allowed to go off campus for lunch because of certain restrictions placed on us due to previous students’ behavior. I feel as if this restriction is unfair and it takes that experience away from many students who've never gone out for lunch. I school also restricts students from going into the courtyard, again because of previous students’ behavior. There are many other restrictions similar to those, and I think it's unfair and it takes away from the students. These minor restrictions take attention away from actual problems around my campus, so I believe changing them would not only be fair but also beneficial. Students will be able to have those experiences that they deserve and it will allow our school staff and administration to focus on the real problems prevalent on our campus.
If I was given the opportunity to change things around my school I know it would be a huge responsibility. I would be required to think very deeply about what I would do and the decisions I make would need to help my school. That's why I feel like improving the restrooms in my school, incorporating more activities, and improving some restrictions placed on students would fulfill that duty and positively change my school to make it more enjoyable for students, staff, and visitors.
