Mountains into Molehills by Caleb - November 2018 Scholarship Essay

As I look back and ponder my four years of high school, it is difficult to sum up all of the joys, sorrows, lessons, and experiences in a simple senior quote. However, if given the chance, my senior quote would likely be “faith and hard work make mountains into molehills.” This senior quote reveals a couple of different things about me. The choice for my quote shows that I value hard work and integrity as the main method for generating accomplishments. Additionally, it shows that I am a person of faith, using my faith to find moral ground.

The first thing that my intended senior quote reveals about me is that I value faith. During high school, any time that a situation has seemed overwhelming, dire, grim, or otherwise overpowering, it has been my strong faith that has gotten me through. Jesus’ promise to walk with me through hard times is something that I can turn to when I am assailed by the challenging aspects of living life. Life in any stage is not easy on those who live it. This principle is especially true during the teenage years. Thankfully, I have found a source of strength that goes beyond my own ability to perform. This grounding in faith makes even the most terrible situations less frightening. In this way, the mountain of high school is turned into a molehill.

Another thing that my intended senior quote reveals about me is the value that I place on integrity and hard work. I have done well in high school, but it has been a direct result of my willingness to put in the effort. While my faith gives me the comfort and solace to press on during the hard times, it is ultimately my laboring that gets me through them. Additionally, the principle of hard work also applies during the good times as well. I have chosen not to view the easier or lighter times in high school as a time for me to be lazy or to relax. I have put my best effort in at every turn, 110% of the time, and it has paid off. Overall, I have been able to accomplish some great things during my high school career, due to perseverance and effort.

In the beginning, when all of the requirements for a high school diploma and a teenage life were viewed, it felt as though I was staring straight up a mountain. The requirements are towering. However, I have made a discovery throughout my time in high school. I have discovered that with a strong moral grounding, and a strong work ethic, the mountain I first beheld dissolved into little more than a molehill.
