Art - A Way of Life by caleb - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
If the roles were reversed and I were the teacher of a subject of my choice, i’d choose to teach art. I’ve always had a talent for drawing ever since I can remember. Growing up I would always watch my dad draw, and I was always amazed by what a human being could produce on paper with a simple pencil. I immediately knew I wanted to pursue art as well.
Aside from growing up in an artistic environment I personally view myself as someone who would be more appropriate for teaching in a less conservative type of class. If it’s one characteristic I believe an art teacher should possess, I think it should be the ability to be open minded. I can easily imagine myself being the “cool” compassionate teacher covered in tattoos who’s always there for his student’s when they need him and understands them on a level that most of the other teachers wouldn’t be capable of.
Drawing has always been an escape for me throughout my life. Whenever I faced struggles or hardships, I knew I could always find a piece of paper, a pencil, and just draw away until my negative emotions were no longer an issue. Art isn’t just a special skill an individual has. Art is an escape. Art is freedom of expression. Art is something that can take you into an entirely different realm of creativity and acceptance that no other subject can. Art is a way of life. That’s why I would choose to teach art.
