Indiana by Caitlynn - April 2016 Scholarship Essay
“You may delay, but time will not, and lost time is never found again,” quoted by Benjamin Franklin. Avoiding procrastination is the best advice one can give to another, even dating back to one of our Founding Fathers. Procrastination may give you time to ease your mind or hang out with friends, but all of your study sessions, assignments, homework, quizzes, etc. are left abandoned and will quickly catch up to you. You have a month to complete a project and you procrastinate for two weeks. The other two weeks you may have events or scheduled practices you have to attend which lessons the time you have for your project. The week before you have nothing done and you are biting your nails and going back and forth between ideas. Why cause your mind, body, and soul this much stress? When you’re assigned a big project, work on it little by little three to four times a week until it is completed. You may even complete it early and allot time for extracurricular activities such as clubs, intramural sports, or volunteering in your community.
To help avoid procrastination try to remember what your objective is, what steps you’ll need to take, what you have accomplished so far, and why you are doing this. Many people begin with a list of steps, how much time each step will take, and when it will fit in your schedule. When you make mistakes don’t put yourself down. When you think you are going to be distracted, see yourself succeeding and how good it will feel when you’ve accomplished your goal. Have others support you, or reach your goal with you so you’re not alone. Accomplish a little everyday so you are sure that it will be finished.
There are many people who become problematic when it comes to procrastination. You can look up how to’s online, speak with a friend, or conquer procrastination with a group of friends. No matter how you defeat procrastination, remember that you may delay but time will not.
