Hey there, second grader! You are growing so fast. Do you remember just two years ago starting kindergarten? Were you scared and excited at the same time? I bet you still remember your first teacher. Didn't you learn a lot of new things and important stuff? I remember learning how to write and memorize important things like my address. Everything was starting to open up because you were learning to read and recognize words and that was fun! Can you imagine looking at a word like "House" and not knowing what it was? And now there are hundreds of words you look at and automatically read in your mind. You've learned so much.

I bet you have plans for your adult job and know what you would like to be when you grow up. I remember thinking I wanted to be a scientist. There are so many things a scientist needs to learn. If you want to be a teacher you have a lot of important things to learn, too. Teachers are so smart because they teach us how to read and write, how to solve math problems and count money. They teach us about history and what the future can be. The only way to get that smart is to stay in school and go to college. It doesn't matter if you want to be a police officer or doctor or even a counselor. All of these jobs need people that go to college and learn new things.

If you get a job at a restaurant or clothing store there is no guarantee that the company will stay in business. A job like that can be fun, but things can happen and the company could close. If that were to happen to you you would not be able to go to work or earn a paycheck. Sadly, people can take away your job, but no one can take away your education. Once you earn your degree you have something that permanently belongs to you.

So many opportunities might come your way if you stay in school and continue forward. Your future degree is waiting for you so you can get that job you've always wanted. You will make so many people proud and the best thing is that you will be so proud of yourself! Just imagine how much smarter you will become and how many choices you will have in life. College will make so many things possible. You will also meet new people and make life long friends.

Take it from me, a high school senior. I was in second grade just like you. I am so excited and nervous about going to college, but I know I can do it. My teachers have prepared me for this next step just like you are being prepared. I plan to become a veterinarian because I love animals and want to help them stay healthy and care for them if they become sick. I will never reach that goal without college. Time goes by so quickly that before you know it you will be walking across that high school stage getting your diploma and planning your first time in college. I am doing it and you can do it, too!
