Hello,
My name is Caelyn Unger and I am a rising college freshman at West Virginia University, where I plan to major in journalism. I believe that journalism acts as an essential channel, vital for expressing differing viewpoints, enlightening minds, and yielding positive change in society. I am writing to express my keen interest and enthusiasm in the Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest, which can help me further my desire to delve deeper into the world of journalism and use it as a tool to cultivate understanding and empathy within our diverse society.
Since my schooling years, my interests gravitated towards the realm of communication and journalism. My consistent academic performance characterized by a high school GPA of 3.8 reflects my dedication towards my studies and my capacity to excel. I have been honing critical writing, researching, and interpersonal skills essential to thrive in a field like journalism. I have had a significant interest in current events, international politics, and how our world communicates, making my decision to major in journalism a natural fit for my curiosities.
I am a white woman cognizant of the diversity and the plurality of voices present within our country, and indeed, our world. My awareness of the breadth of perspectives and experiences that exist around the world fuels me to contribute to a more comprehensive, inclusive journalism landscape. I intend to employ my journalistic pursuits to facilitate conversations, challenge preconceptions and, most importantly, convey stories that uphold the essence of truth and fairness.
The Varsity Tutors College Scholarship Contest offers an opportunity that aligns with my educational goals. Winning this scholarship will be a crucial stepping stone in my journey towards becoming a successful journalist. It will facilitate my academic journey in college and broaden my understanding of the current media landscape. The $200 prize may seem minimal for some, but to me, it would significantly alleviate the financial burdens associated with my college expenses, allowing me to focus more on my studies and less on the economic hardships.
I am proud of the academic and personal strides I have made thus far, yet I am eager to push myself further in my college community. I am motivated to leverage my journalistic studies to initiate critical dialogues about race, gender, and the unique stories that compose our multifaceted society.
In conclusion, with my strong academic track record, passion for journalism, and dedication towards fairness and diversity, I am confident that I am a promising candidate for this scholarship. I am excited at the prospect of using this opportunity to build upon my journalistic competencies and contribute positively to society.
Thank you very much for considering my application.
Sincerely,
Caelyn Unger.
