A Pleasure to Serve by Cael - December 2019 Scholarship Essay

As a junior at Hartland High School, I pride myself on my membership in the National Honor Society. It is a fairly prestigious group, and I consider myself lucky to have been accepted after qualifying sophomore year. National Honor Society, with the help of student members and the school staff that become involved, assist the community by performing volunteer work around town, including volunteering at food banks, elementary schools, and wherever else needs assistance. When something or someone around town needs a crew of intelligent workers, a post is put up online for all members to see, and spots are quickly filled to help out. More so than any other community organization I have participated in, National Honor Society really feels like a family of committed, hard workers.
But more than just affecting the community in a positive way, National Honor Society also affects its members, including myself. My latest volunteering opportunity was bell-ringing outside of a local grocery store for the Salvation Army for a few hours with some of my Honor Society buddies. It was very cold despite our many layers, but it was heartwarming to be wished a merry Christmas by many of the people who donated some change. When serving with friends in an Honor Society activity, it feels very good to help others with no incentive other than simply making the world a better place. It has made me more open to give my time to good causes, and it always feels great after serving. I never regret putting hours into the organization.
To conclude, National Honor Society is an incredible organization, but the best thing about it is how incredible it makes volunteers like my friends and I feel for giving our time back to the community.
