The Study of what Makes Us Human by Cadence - February 2022 Scholarship Essay

If the opportunity presented itself to design a new elective class, I would design a class that focuses on more of the social sciences that aren’t taught in schools, for example anthropology and archeology. Anthropology is the study of what makes us human, and through archeology anthropologists consider the past to see how human groups lived hundreds or thousands of years ago and what was important to them.

In the elective class students would learn the processes of anthropology as well as the skills to analyze and interpret like an anthropologist. Students would also learn the process of archeology as well as what an archeologist studies and how they study it. The students can also learn about forensic anthropology and how it compares to archeology but also how it is different from archeology.By having multiple social sciences in one class it does limit the amount of teaching and learning that a student can experience for that one topic. But it also allows the students to be introduced to the topics and may spark some interest for the students. It can help to expose more students to those related fields and open up more opportunities for them to enter and study the related fields.

It would be beneficial to students because it would give them an opportunity to learn about the different fields of study that aren’t normally taught in school, that they could potentially study in the future. It would also provide students that are already interested in anthropology and archeology to take a class about a topic that they are passionate about. It could also provide students that are interested in the topics to further deepen their interest in the topic.
