"Welcome! You're Wanted!" by Cade - July 2018 Scholarship Essay
Welcome! You’re Wanted!” would be my slogan if I was running for student body president. Without question, before any independent learning takes place, before any of the academic seedlings have a chance to grown, students have to feel and know they are welcome, wanted, and safe. That would be my mission and goal; when that goal is accomplished, just watch the mountains that will be moved! The feeling of family, comradery and unity is something that that individuals have sought over, have desperately craved, all throughout history.
In order for this to occur, I would assign each student with three other students- immediate buddies if you will. No formula would be used to create these buddie, just random selection, such as life always is. This pod of four would communicate with each other on a daily basis, be represented in rallies and gatherings, and would, as the year progressed, become morphed into other groups making new connections and relationships. The idea behind this is that each person would have at least three, then seven, then eleven people, etc…who know them, carry about them, and won’t let them disappear in the cracks of being ignored or not fitting-in.
Communication and being visible is a necessity in order for someone to feel welcome, wanted, and safe. The student body would hear this creed daily through text messages, calls, announcements and personal greetings. They would see it in banners, mail-outs and flyers. They would also know this by my actions as student body present. They would be my focus; not pop machines or a new parking lot. To me, nothing is more valuable than one’s safety and personal confidence- that would be my way of impacting my school.
