Fashion Inspiration to Architecture by Bryant - February 2025 Scholarship Essay

How did my fashion style inspire and influence my decision to study architecture? Fashion is how I exhibit my creative side. When I was in fifth grade, my fashion was black and white. Black shorts, a white T-shirt, white socks, and black tennis shoes were my standard attire; everything you could find on a bathroom checkered floor. When winter came, my outfit changed dramatically to a sweatshirt and sweats. Sometimes, I would even get crazy and occasionally alternate between bland green and bland brown. Both fashion and architecture create shelter for the body sparked by creativity and personal expression.

My fashionable style has taken me two years to create, and the art is still evolving. I wanted to achieve true confidence. Pulled back shoulders, smart choices, and “being the guy who naturally looked dapper,” as my friends say. Before becoming fully confident, I had to learn that not everything I wanted would arrive on my doorstep that next morning. Building confidence would take effort and time. I would have to show effort in holding a strong posture and choose quality clothing that matched my physique to feel confident and comfortable. I learned fashion was only one step in bringing out my confident self and it would take time to master all the steps.

My fresh style ranges from bold colors to sharp close-fitting clothing. Now I lay out my wardrobe the weekend before each school week to visualize how each outfit will empower me. I gain tremendous confidence putting on a smart, dapper outfit, almost carefree of expectations and judgments by others.

My fashion inspiration triggered my curiosity about design and architecture. On Saturdays, I have been traversing my creative side with the Silicon Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects by attending sketching classes at interesting historic locations with local architects. Also, as design lead for a Playhouse Program with Habitat for Humanity, I sketched the artwork for the playhouse and led my fellow Boys Team Charity Teammates in painting it.

These experiences connect to my creative side and my future career in architecture as it helps me understand what it is like to be an architect. I am eager to enhance my knowledge of architecture in college utilizing my style, creativity, and design skills.
