If I was Student Body President by Bryant - July 2018 Scholarship Essay
If I was running for student body president, there are many things that I would change to positively impact my school. The number one thing that I would do is create more school events that are less exclusive so that every student is welcome to show their school spirit and participate. At my high school, the associated student body was mainly responsible for high school dances and big events, like prom and homecoming. These events would usually be booked in an affluent city like Newport Beach and the ticket prices would be very expensive, usually around $100. With the leftover money in the school budget, ASB members would host an annual trip to Disneyland during a school day that was only exclusive to their group. First of all, as president, events like Prom and Homecoming would be made more affordable. During my senior year, it bothered me that some my friends and classmates couldn’t afford to go to Homecoming on the Catalina Flyer (a speed boat) because the tickets were too expensive, while ASB members were allowed to skip school to go on a fully paid field trip to Disneyland. Now, I’m not suggesting to have Homecoming in the school gym, but the rented location should be closer to school and cheaper than renting out a boat. In addition, I would try to create more school events that would raise awareness about important issues and educate students about trending topics. This could be through food drives and school dress up days where students could become more engaged and communicate with each other. I would also host school raffles and giveaways to encourage positive behavior inside and outside of the classroom and to increase academic scores. The whole point of student body is to encourage more student interaction and community involvement. Drawing on my high school experience, the student body government was just another exclusive group, like the jocks and the skateboarders. If I was student body president, I would turn ASB into something that everyone would want to be a part of and would receive an equal opportunity of getting into. Student body gets a bad reputation as something that is largely based on popularity and knowing a lot of people. I want to change the narrative by making it a program that gives the students a voice where it is solely run for them. Hopefully, we can change school culture by opening discussions about certain issues and making changes where its it's necessary. To conclude, I want to thank you for your time in reading my essay and I want to thank you for the opportunity to participate in your scholarship. I hope you have a wonderful day!
