AVID by Bryanna - June 2018 Scholarship Essay
The only elective I took all of high school was Avid. AVID isn’t only a class but it becomes your family, when you are struggling your classmate is always willing to help. AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID is many things in one. For me it was my tutor time, a class where I wasn’t afraid to express myself, college application help and so much more. For everyone AVID is different but what we all have in common with our AVID class is you will succeed in high school. My teacher went out of her way to help me get my F in chemistry honors and found a tutor that was majoring in bio chemistry, things like that is what AVID is all about.
AVID isn’t only just for students that want to go to college after high school, it’s for everyone. Before I decided on college I thought about joining the army but I wasn’t completely sure. I told my teacher and she told me about a recruiter that is also a teacher who she asked to speak to the class and he could answer any questions I had. When he came he answered all my questions and more. I decided maybe right now it isn’t the best choice for me. It was really touching that she went out of her way to help me, how many high school teachers do you know that will do that? That’s just the kind of teacher’s AVID teachers are.
If it wasn’t for AVID I wouldn’t be going to the college I am in the fall. My junior year there was a college representative from Johnson and Wales University. I just thought this was another recruiter that just wanted our information to send us tons of emails but I was wrong. At the end of the presentation she asked the class who would like a card to write down our information and a list of all the majors and the 4-different campus they had. Before this I never thought I would be able to afford college let alone out of state. If it wasn’t for AVID I wouldn’t be going to college out of state with my major.
There are so many reason that AVID should be a required class. It prepares you for life after high school, it pushes you to do better for yourself, it becomes your family and most importantly it opens opportunities you thought you would never be able to do. Take it from me, a student who will be first in my family to attend college. Remember AVID isn’t only for students that want to go to college. It’s for ALL students.
