From a Fear of Blood to Becoming a Health Science Major by Brooke - April 2025 Scholarship Essay

Growing up, I never wanted to venture out of my comfort zone to discover all of the career possibilities awaiting me. I did not think about careers unfamiliar to me that would spark up an interest, and I was terrified of anything related to medicine and the human body, particularly blood. I stuck to what was familiar and did not question it. When I got to high school, I started to really explore what I wanted to do with my life. What career field was I interested in? Education? Medicine? Engineering? Business? I did not really know where to begin. Throughout my freshman year of high school, I started to witness how much I enjoyed and thrived in my science classes. I wondered if a career in science and potentially medicine could be a fit for me. I had only ever heard of the usual roles in medicine, but I wanted to try something new. Currently, I am looking into becoming a physician assistant (PA). My passion for science has influenced me to work really hard in all of my classes and try to learn as much new information as I can. Whether this has been through taking more difficult science courses, helping tutor students in science classes, or joining a medical-based club at school, my passions have encouraged me to get out there and explore the variety of knowledge there is to be learned. My friends and family have also been a huge inspiration to me as they have always encouraged me to do what I love, even if it did not make sense to other people. They influenced me to get out into the world and explore what truly made me happy, rather than settling with what I was comfortable with.
In terms of my education, I plan to earn my bachelor’s degree in health sciences and attend PA school after college. I have always been driven to succeed academically, wanting to learn as much as I can. I knew a degree in health sciences was the right fit for me because it would allow me to branch out and discover what I really wanted to do in a career while continuing my education in the sciences and medicine, which have always fascinated me. To be able to continue expanding my knowledge and exposure to the sciences at the collegiate level inspires me to keep learning and growing as a student. There is limitless information in the world, and I have become determined to continue learning throughout my entire life, even after finishing school. I also know that a degree in health sciences will provide a solid foundation for my future career. This major will grant me exposure to the field of medicine so that I can discover my true passions in life and help those around me. Working as a PA gives me the opportunity to use my research and knowledge to help other people. I am able to make them feel better, cure their illness, or even give them a more enjoyable life. This fills me with the drive to continue working hard and to the best of my ability to make sure I am able to reach all of the goals I have in store for myself and create a better future for others as well as myself
