My Ideal Classroom Environment by Brooke - October 2014 Scholarship Essay
We are constantly told that our classroom environment is set up specifically to help us succeed in school. However, what actually makes up a perfect environment? We all learn differently yet we are all treated as if learning ability is something constant that does not need to change for each individuals specific needs. My needs vary from the next students.
My ideal classroom environment would be being able to sit at a desk listening to a teacher talk and explain a lesson to me without all the distractions of rowdy and disruptive classmates. A classroom should be somewhere where you can think and ask questions without distractions or insults for not understanding something. A teacher should be able to explain a topic or problem without having to speak over multiple people that are most likely only there because it is the law.
Another thing that would be in my ideal environment is a teacher that explains instead of lectures. Getting lectured to is not a very effective way to get something to stick in someone's mind. Teachers that can incorporate a story into the lesson make it easier to remember and learn. It shows that they do not just want to do their job and get paid. It shows us that they really do care about our success.
The main point of my ideal environment is that we as students get treated as people instead of just another job. I want an environment that I feel free to learn in and never feel as if I am not smart enough or insignificant. Learning should be something we get to look forward to, not dread.
