Mathematically Limitless Possibilities by Brooke - October 2016 Scholarship Essay
Students are forced everyday to sit in classrooms and learn about boring subjects, but what if you were told that students and teachers could reverse roles? That would mean that you could choose the subject you are passionate about. I would choose to teach math.
Math has been my favorite subject since elementary school. I would enjoy teaching math because it has always been the one subject that challenges me. Math always keeps me thinking and allows me to problem solve. I love that in math there is never a right or wrong way to solve a problem. You get to think outside the box. Math is a subject that you could incorporate fun activities into your lesson plans to keep students intrigued, which is something I would want to strive to do. One reason that I love math is because I have always been blessed with great math teachers that make learning math excited. I would aspire to be like my past teachers because I want other kids to enjoy math as much as I do. Math is a subject that opens up a lot of job fields and can help you out in the real world. This is an opportunity that I want every student to be able to experience.
Another reason I would want to teach math is because this is not a subject women usually teach. People are always saying, "Math is only for guys." Well I disagree and I enjoy challenging those people and proving them wrong. Women can do math just as well as men can. If I were teaching math I would try to find new ways to engage female students. I feel strongly that more women are needed in math and science occupations. I would love to help encourage young women to find careers in math related fields. Mathematics can open the limitless possibilities to the eyes of students.
