A Trip to Creative Writing Land by Brooke - June 2016 Scholarship Essay

An academic obstacle that I overcame is the roadblock I continuously got when sitting in creative writing. It was difficult for me just to write in class when we were asked to "free write" and then read part of it to the class. Instead of getting discouraged by my inability to write on the spot, I decided to practice writing more and just let my thoughts be expressed on paper. It did not matter what I wrote down in that short period of time. I knew it was necessary to talk to my professor about my obstacle. He informed me that I am a good writer and just need to be able to express my inner personality more. I thought this was strange, but then an essay I wrote about a caterpillar changed my perspective. My professor raved about this essay, which showed me that it is a good thing to be creative in your writing so people want to read more.
I learned that it is better to get your thoughts down as they come into your mind so you do not forget them. Although I may like to be a perfectionist about my writing, it is not going to be the final copy. I need to understand that there is time to fix mistakes and areas that are not clear, seeing as I ended up with four rough drafts of my caterpillar essay before the final copy.
This academic obstacle showed me that I should not get worked up about the minor setbacks in life. Having to dig deeper for creativity helped me become a better writer and student in the process.
