A Want For Change by Brok - July 2019 Scholarship Essay
Education is something that has ingrained itself into every facet of my life, and honestly, it's for the best. I grew up looking up to my dad and wanting to be just like him. He served 24 years in the United States Army and that was a huge deciding factor for why I chose education. He would tell me about the towns he was deployed to in Bosnia, Iraq, Germany, etc. He would sit me down and explain why the Army was deployed in these countries, building my fascination for social studies. I'd forgo playing video games to watch documentaries with him to get a better grasp on certain historical events and people, thus creating a huge focal point of my life and future. I decided that since I love social studies so much and my dad made it so important and interesting for me, I wanted to do the same for future generations. I want to teach future generations about the past generations in an attempt to help them prevent past mistakes. I still spend countless hours reading and watching historical texts and films to always expand my knowledge because I want to be the best history teacher I can be for my future students. I want to ignite the same fire inside of my students that my dad did inside of me, I want to make them love history, a typically boring subject. My passion for teaching these students keeps me up at night, I constantly think of how I'm going to arrange my classroom and how I will start each class and school year. I find education to be the most rewarding career choice because you can change these kids lives, you can help them find their future careers, and you can be a role model for them if their lives are chaotic at home. I had teachers who I definitely looked up to and they changed my life. I had a radio teacher, Mr. Whitehair, and he changed my mind on radio and really pushed me towards education because he could tell I had the ability to motivate kids and push them to success. I want to be one of those teachers that a student never forgets because I changed their life or I taught them all about the Battle of the Teutoburg forest and they will never forget it. I want to push kids to try harder than they ever have before, I want to turn my students into people who will never take no as an answer and will strive for nothing but the best. I don't need the best paying job or the best car or house, I just want to be the best teacher that I can possibly be. I want to make students happy to come to school and learn, I want to provide a safe place for the students with broken homes, I want to be a pioneer in these kids lives. I went to a very diverse high school that had people from all cultural backgrounds and socioeconomic standings, so I know how hard it can be to be one of the less fortunate students. I want to be there for all my students, but especially the ones who really need it because of issues at home or they can't understand certain topics.
