More Than a Piece of Paper by Brody - October 2024 Scholarship Essay

A college degree takes time, effort, and hard work. With such a monumental and difficult goal for a degree, it is only fair that such a feat grants enormous benefits that will eventually shape one's life. The greatest benefits of a college degree include having the ability to be considered for a profitable career, exemplifying one's master in a subject or subjects of interest, and ultimately having the opportunity to be skillful enough to impact the world.
College is important when looking for a job that can pay well and be sustainable. In today’s economy, jobs are extremely competitive and hard to come by. Most common occupations are full and getting a job can be difficult without having an education. Even then, these common jobs like fast food workers or retailers can have extremely low pay, usually minimum wage. When a person looking for a job has a college degree, it can greatly benefit them in this area. Not only does it stand you out from the rest, but it exemplifies the effort you have put in education. In addition, more difficult jobs to get can be easily accepted when you represent yourself as a college graduate. These jobs also solve the issue of pay, as they tend to have much higher pay when a college degree is required. In any case, a college degree on one’s resume is not overlooked. When applying for a job of passion, it can also be extremely beneficial to have a degree in that subject of interest.
A college degree not only assists in jobs, but it truly represents how a student has taken years of their life in a subject that is likely passionate for them. In my case, I plan to major in biology, a subject I adore to learn and study about. Having a degree like that not only plans my future to get a job I am passionate about, but it would also demonstrate the hard work I would go through to get such a degree. College students take years of their lives to get these degrees to get a successful career, and it is only fueled by their passion. A student would not handle years of their life studying something they are not passionate about, and that is a benefit of a college degree. It narrows down passion to a paper that can exemplify that student’s effort in a subject they enjoy, benefiting them as they continue their journey after college to change the world for the better.
The world is always changing and developing from the people who live in it. Those skillful enough, like those with a college degree, can make a larger impact to better the world in the way they wish. Take for example those with political college degrees. These people are the future of governments, countries, and ultimately the world. Having a college degree benefits them from their knowledge of politics, through strategies, policies, and more. In addition, go back to my idea of becoming a biology major. Biology itself is one of the most influential and changing sciences that impacts the world. With ongoing issues of climate change and disease, those with a college degree can greatly benefit from it, because in reality it is more than just a degree. It represents that you have taken years studying a subject, studying and learning knowledge that goes into use in situations like this. Situations that will determine the world, and impact it from you.
The benefits of a college degree and education are extremely crucial, especially in this day and age. There is a stereotype that college graduates never put their degree to use; but in reality, a college degree is more than a piece of paper, and it is more than just a representation of education. It shapes your future and the future of others, sustaining your life and the world in a time that is difficult for many.
