How a Nursing Major Impacts Society by Brittyn - December 2023 Scholarship Essay

There are many fundamental elements to a society. One of the most important things, though, is the medical personnel that keeps the community healthy and happy. As a nursing major, I believe that I can impact society by providing care for those in need, and caring for those that can’t care for themselves.
To begin, I believe that as a nurse, I can provide care for those that really need it. I was inspired to become a nurse because my mom was a nurse for 25 years. I got to grow up and watch her care for those that weren’t able to care for themselves. She worked in a nursing home, and as I grew up, I began to better understand her reasoning. The main point that I realized was that taking care of elderly individuals is giving back to them what they gave to us, like comfort, security, and love. Going into nursing, I have very seriously considered working in a nursing home or assisted living facility so that I can carry out my mom’s mission of taking care of those that really need it.
In conclusion, I believe that my major in nursing can impact society by providing care for those that need it and that can’t always take care of themselves. My childhood experiences of watching my mother put so much time and effort into caring for her patients in the nursing home have made me realize that my life purpose is to care for others just as she did.
