It Works If You Work It by brittney - March 2019 Scholarship Essay

I love my high school. Being at my school for 6 years, I have navigated through the roads that have led to failures and roads that have led to successes. Since I have been down these paths before I know the perfect advice to give incoming freshman at my high school. The one thing I will tell incoming freshman to my school is, “ It works if you work it.” A phrase I learned in church. My reverend used it as a way for the congregation to follow his lessons. The lesson will only work if the congregation puts in the work to succeed. So I took this lesson from church and incorporated into my academic routine.

On the tour I would show the group my first science classroom. The first class that I decided to use the advice from church. I decided to use this advice because I was having a tough time in this class. I thought I could do well if I listen in class, but listening was not enough. I had to step up and get help from my teacher. Once I took that step I could see an improvement in my performance. I would tell the group, their success at this high school is determined by the work they put in to be successful. Teachers at the school are proponents of self advocacy. So if they see students slacking off in class and not turning in homework they will have no reason to show leniency. But when a student shows passion and grit for the class, the teacher will work with the student to help them succeed. I want the students to know the teachers are there to help them only if they express the need to them.

My high school is a place students will love once they understand how to flourish in it. That is why incoming students need to know how to succeed so they can love it like I do.
