Educational Value by Brittany - April 2015 Scholarship Essay

To me, education represents two things: overcoming the past and creating a better future.

I dropped out of high school when I was 17 for a variety of reasons but I refused to let that be the end of my educational journey. I've spent the last seven or more years working hard and preserving to become the student I am today. I graduated from my undergrad with a 3.8 GPA and two degrees. I think I'm doing okay.

It's these experiences in education that have taught me how important my education and for not only my future but the future of those around me. Education can literally change lives and I hope to instill that idea into people for the rest of my life.

I want to pursue a career in academia so I can help other students like me: students who have had a rough go of it, students who aren't sure what they can do with their future, students who think education isn't right for them. If it wasn't for some of the educators I encountered in my journey to today, I probably would have quit long ago. I want to be that for someone else's educational future as well.

Education and knowledge as a whole is one of the most underrated facets of the human existence. I didn't learn how important it was to me and my future until I'd given up on it at 17. I hope to be able to help others come to that realization before it's too late so maybe, just maybe, they will not struggle as much as I have to go to where they want to be in life.
