Detail to Everyday by Brittany - October 2018 Scholarship Essay

"Thinking outside the box" is a phrase that has many meanings. One that stood out to me was the detail that comes in our daily routine. I work for an orthodontist who was in the Air Force, along with that comes a lot of responsibility. He has a specific way that treatment at our office needs to be done, one of those ways is being sensitive to detail. Each and every patient that comes into our office gets the exact same treatment. The assistants are not only trained to assist the Orthodontist but to also learn what and why we do the procedures the way we do.

Learning by understanding vs. doing because you have to makes a huge difference in how one views anything. It is important to always find ways to become better and do better in everything, even if that comes from making mistakes. "If we only did things that were easy, we wouldn't actually be learning anything. We'd just be practicing things we already knew." (Dockterman) Thinking outside the box isn't always an easy thing but can be very rewarding if we apply ourselves and pay attention to detail.

In order to think outside the box in detail you need to always be learning and asking questions. It requires you to look for things that you may have not seen before, to take responsibility and give the best effort possible. Thinking outside the box does not require a lot of skill, only a willingness to strive to achieve what it is you want. Often one might assume that in order to think outside of the box you need to have a certain skill to solve problems, for example Math is not my strongest subject but it does not mean that I can't get the grade I want. I have the ability to "think outside the box" and get the help I need and search for it.

Thinking outside the box is a way to continually exercise your thoughts, feelings, teaching, learning, etc. As detail is used, and one is striving to do all they can to "think outside the box" it will come natural in everything one strives to accomplish and it will make all the difference.
