My Life Story by Brittany - June 2013 Scholarship Essay

"You must have control of the authorship of your own destiny. The pen that writes your life story must be held in your own hand." -Irene C. Kassorla
For me, attending college means writing a better story for myself. It means creating a better life and a brighter future. It means taking control of my life and finding my calling, my destiny.
Learning is a very important aspect of life for me. Furthering my education at the college level has given me a sense of fulfillment, and a new found appreciation for life. I believe that getting my college degree will help me become a better-rounded individual. It will provide me with great knowledge and experience, and the potential for more job opportunities in the future. By attending college, I am bettering myself, and by bettering myself I am more able, more motivated and more excited about life and about the future.
I am currently attending Grand Canyon University online, working toward my bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education. Once I obtain my bachelor’s degree, I plan to pursue my master’s degree in Elementary Education. With both degrees, I will be certified to work with children from birth through eighth grade, which will provide me a wider range of possibilities and career opportunities. I want to become an elementary school teacher because I love helping others and I love working with children. I would be honored to have the chance to introduce them to education, help them expand their knowledge and get them excited about learning. I long to take a deeper sense of purpose in life, to be a part of something bigger and to really make a difference in the lives of others. I believe that in becoming a teacher I will be able to achieve all of these things and more.
I am currently living on my own and working two jobs in order to pay for college. Once I graduate with my degrees, I hope to become a full time teacher, and retire my juggling act of balancing work, school, home and family, while still trying to find time for myself. Being able to do so will reduce my stress level and allow me a better, happier, healthier lifestyle. I have always dreamed of having a big family. Unfortunately, my current situation does not allow the time or funds necessary to raise children. I am hopeful that after graduation my hard work and long wait will pay off with a stable job, better income, more free time, and the opportunity to finally start my family.
Attending college means a change for the better. It means the chance to begin the life I’ve always dreamed of by pursuing my dream career. I know that once I finish college, my life will be more complete. I will have the tools, experience and education that I need to obtain a job that I will love, I will be more financially stable, and I will finally be able to begin, and provide for, a family. Attending college is just one chapter of my life story, which is still in the works. For me, attending college is the key to happiness.
