Gratitude by Brittany - August 2017 Scholarship Essay
College is about exploration. Whether we are exploring future career options, or future lifestyle choices or even who to become friends with, this time is precious. And for that, we must be grateful because not everyone has the opportunity to roam a rowdy college campus, go to pesky office hours to ask those “stupid” questions, stay up late, studying with a study group until our brains fall out, or even eat that “repulsive” food at the dining hall loathed with a passion by students.
Now, none of us is perfect. We are bound to procrastinate on a plethora of assignments and reap the consequences of limited amounts of sleep, skip office hours to connect with our genius professors, or stay out just a bit too late one weekend after the other. But at one moment, a spark of change is ignited within us. We wake up one day and realize just how much time we might have wasted and what a life changing opportunity we have right at the edge of our minuscule dorm room beds. This moment may happen at the end of our college careers; luckily for me, it happened the summer after my freshman year. No matter what, it is a vital moment in our short lives.
So, if I were a professor, I would teach a class about gratitude. Not only is gratitude important for our college careers, but it is an essential quality to have in every aspect of our lives and the earlier we learn to internalize and express it, the better.
