"Sure!" by Briley - November 2018 Scholarship Essay
“There’s a livestock judging contest tonight, we need one more person can you go?”
“Sure!”
“We have a scholarbowl match in an hour and someone backed out, would you be able to fill in?”
“Sure!”
“The bus is loading for the speech contest and I need someone to do SOS, I was hoping you could go?”
“Sure!”
Throughout my entire high school career I have loved being involved in many clubs and activities. I try to be involved with as much as possible. One thing that I noticed about high school and about being in clubs is that nothing will ever go exactly as planned. I’m not saying this as a bad thing, and i’m not trying to throw anyone under the bus. But, I have had the opportunity to meet new people and have new doors of opportunity open for me because of these misfortunes. The simple four letter word “sure” has made my high school career so exciting, and it has definitely made it one of a kind.
Various times club leaders and representatives have asked me to go to a contest or event the very last minute. It could be a day before notice, or it could be a five minutes notice. I love to help out every club, and I am open to all opportunities, even if I do have to give a speech I only learned in a few hours against kids who have been practicing their speech for months. Although, because of my openness and willingness to say the simple word “sure” to any opportunity I get, I have found many new hobbies and interests because of it. I would have never joined the speech club or participated in the school play if it wasn’t for the club’s leader asking me to go five minutes before the bus left. I also would have never had the opportunity to go to meet new friends from grades above if it wasn’t for the short one hour notice that I was going to the scholar bowl match. I also would have never known that I could win the livestock judging contest if it wasn’t for my FFA advisor asking me to go to the contest, when I had no intention to go otherwise.
If I had to pick a yearbook quote it would definitely be the four letter word “sure!”. This word would have to have an exclamation point at the end to show my enthusiasm for pushing myself to do things I am not the most comfortable with. This word has made my high school career one of a kind. It has opened many doors of opportunity for me and it has taught me more about myself than I would have ever thought.
