Woman of Power by Brighton - March 2023 Scholarship Essay

There are so many people who have notably made a difference in my education journey, but the first who comes to mind is Mrs. Rogers. Most teachers I have come across in my career have never had the evident passion that she has when she teaches. She’s the kind of person you watch during a lecture and know without a doubt that she has learned every area of her subject and is continuously learning more every day. She is always educated on the most recent current event and understands the underlying factors that caused the event. Mrs. Rogers never ceases to amaze me.

Not only are her lessons entertaining, but they are in depth and interesting. There are some classes I feel dread walking into, but I look forward to her class every day. Schooling has often been overwhelming and mentally exhausting for me. She created an environment where I feel my opinion is welcome and supported. I wanted to voice my thoughts and share my ideas, and knew that not only was she engaged, but she was also engaging the rest of the class to discuss what I would come up with. Normally I avoid group-based discussions, but there I am excited to share what I have learned.

I was fortunate to have a teacher who had faith in me. Especially because she is a political science teacher, who teaches both AP American and AP Comparative government courses. I do not feel judged for what I believe, and can openly share my thoughts without feeling discouraged.

Other than feeling complete acceptance during course discussions, she has encouraged me to be powerful. She is an opinionated, strong, and confident woman. She inspires me to not let gender norms and traditions intervene with my dreams. It is clear that she doesn't let anything get in the way of her either. There aren't enough women in the world who have a personality and a radiating confidence about them. I have trust in her because she is confident and passionate. I know it will be massively vital to have characteristics similar to hers when I take a job in psychiatry. I must be confident in my profession and in my education to be able to help people as needed.
