The Mentor Project by Brielle - June 2026 Scholarship Essay

If I could design a project that improves my school community, I would create a mentorship program that allows senior college students to connect with the incoming freshman college students. The transition into college is sometimes stressful, causing students to become overwhelmed. Many of the freshman students often find trouble balancing friendships, academics, and ultimately figuring out who they are and want to be. With having someone who has already went through the college challenges, it can make a significant difference.
The overall goal of this project would be to afford freshman with a support system within the school community. The Senior mentors would meet virtually or in-person with their assigned student, often giving advice or answering questions that their freshman may have. Senior mentors can also help students to navigate through their tough times, suggesting how they should go about it. Sometimes, students need someone that's willing to listen to them without having judgement.
The mentorship project would not just support the freshman, but also show seniors how to gain communication and leadership skills. A great level of respect would be spread across grade levels, creating a society where everyone feels valued and seen.
I believe that the school community flourishes when students uplift one another. Creating this opportunity for students will remind them that they are not alone, and asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Having those scary conversations that most students are scared to have can sometimes push them through the challenges they face.
This initiative can improve the well-being of students, support school involvement, and inspire students to become mentors of their own.
