A Look into the Future and what Education looks like for Me by Brianna - March 2025 Scholarship Essay

In ten years, I see myself as a dedicated and caring Pediatric Nurse, making a strong impact on the lives of families and young children. I have a goal and that goal is to work in a hospital setting to provide medical care and also emotional support to these children and their families. The journey leading up to my future will be shaped by my education, long dedicated hard work in nursing school, and having the mindset and determination to help other people, as it has been a long lived goal of mine to always want to help people. In this essay, I will discuss how obtaining a bachelor's degree in nursing will help me achieve this role in the medical field and be able to help these children's well-being and overall health.
The nursing profession has been around for years and has drastically changed overtime as well. Nursing first began as mostly women mostly care giving in home settings. For example, Florence Nightingale is the most known and recognized as shaping the nursing profession as well as being the “founder of modern nursing”. Her emphasis on critical care and sanitation played a role in her shaping of the nursing profession. In today's nursing, there is a wide variety of nursing specializations and each requires a very specific training and education requirement. A nurse in today's society must not only have the right knowledge of clinical skills but also have the ability to engage emotionally with young children and their families and address the certain needs of each family. I feel that my purpose is to take care of these children in need in which I will get the education and training that is needed to help these children.
Obtaining a bachelor's degree in nursing is essential for many reasons. Firstly, a strong and well reliable education will provide me with a strong knowledge of the nursing skills needed as well as practicing these skills to make sure my patients will be getting the best care I can provide them. Some courses like human development, anatomy and physiology, as well as psychology, will allow me to have a better understanding of the fundamentals before going to nursing school to actually learn these skills. This also prepares nursing graduates for real world scenarios and the reality that they will be facing. This very specific and important knowledge learned during my studies will help me better respond to the needs of my young patients effectively and responsibly.
My past is what really has strives me to become a passionate and caring nurse and I have always wanted to help people ever since I can remember. I grew up in an abusive household that resulted in me having to take care of my newborn twin brother and sister until they were old enough to start taking care of themselves. I was 8 years old when I had to take on a “mothers” responsibility and ever since then, I have felt like my purpose in life is to take care of people and listen to each and every one of my patients concerns because leaving them unheard with questions about their physical well being, is not the kind of nurse I want to be. I want to be the nurse that makes my young patients leave their appointments knowing that they were fully listened to and helped every way they could be helped. I aim to be the best nurse I can be as an individual because I feel we always need more caring and passionate nurses.
Recently as of 2020 to present time the importance of the need for pediatric nurses has increased significantly. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected us younger individuals negatively showing the need for ongoing critical support and care. The pandemic has shown the most important role that nurses play in giving medical attention as a whole. As I look into my future, I will not only be a nurse behind hospital walls, but instead I will also branch out of those walls to help educate families about preventative care.
Even though the nursing profession has several challenges they face like staff shortages and an increasing demand for nurses, I always will remain positive about the future. As I start on my education journey I am aware that more technology and healthcare practices will keep on shaping the nursing profession. My education will prepare me to get used to these changes and incorporate these developments and advancements into pediatric nursing.
In conclusion, my desire as being a future pediatric nurse goes beyond just simply holding a degree and doing something with it. I am dedicated to providing life changing medical care to young individuals who are in need. I really hope to inspire young individuals who are looking into pursuing a degree in nursing and hopefully encourage them to pursue those careers in pediatric settings. My outlook for the next 10 years is to be a well trained and skilled pediatric nurse who greatly impacts the lives of children and their families every day in a positive way. Getting a bachelor's degree in nursing will give me the skills, knowledge, and gained confidence to get through the challenges nursing comes with.
