My True Passion and Goals by Brianna - May 2023 Scholarship Essay

In college I plan on majoring in communications and broadcasting. I have always been told that my future will be determined by the decisions I make today. Everyone has adversity, and I have certainly had my fair share, but no matter how difficult it was, I always knew what I wanted. I desired success.
Growing up I always felt the need to be perfect. I wanted to be the best at everything I did and get recognized for it. However, as I got older I realized that this was nearly impossible. I struggled my whole life finding my true self and I only just discovered that part of me in the spring of 2022. I quit playing basketball which I have been playing almost my whole life. I grew up in a basketball family so it was like I was born into the sport; but I never had a real love for it. Basketball was acting as a mask, hiding my true potential and identity to everyone around me. Although I was a very skilled player, winning multiple championships, being ranked the #10 shooter in the state of New Jersey and leading my teams to numerous victories, basketball just wasn’t my true passion. My true passion was to just be successful and I used basketball as a placeholder for temporary success because I didn’t realize what my true passion in life was until I quit.
My goal in life is to be an entertainer, preferably in the world of sports. I always dreamt of being on ESPN one day or commentating during sports games, especially basketball. Although I didn’t have much fun playing I genuinely enjoyed watching the game. I also enjoy speaking in front of large crowds and I am very articulate when it comes to public speaking. Being a sports broadcaster has always been a passion of mine and I didn’t realize that until recently.
Along the way I know I am going to encounter many struggles and obstacles but I am willing to fight through them. I am attending Howard University in the fall of 2023 and as a 17 year old female I already have big hopes of being on the big screen broadcasting sports games. This profession is known to be very competitive, especially for women, but I am willing to take on this challenge.
When I attend school in the fall I am going to be very focused on my studies. I plan on joining the sports news station and either learning from their experience and maybe be lucky enough to actually participate in my future craft. I also plan on partaking in numerous internships in the spring and summer every year so I can begin to build my resume for when I graduate in 2027. After college I do plan on attending graduate school to advance my degree in my future career but with my drive, determination and the internships that I receive I hope to get into a good program for sports broadcasting. Every obstacle that I have faced in life has allowed me to find my true passion and I am very grateful for that. Therefore, I will not miss one opportunity that will bring me closer to my goal because it is one worth fighting for.
