Think Ahead by Brianna - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
When you are a freshman in high school you don't think of the responsibilities that await you within the next few years. As I graduated I knew that I had been equipped with information and skills that would help me as I moved onto college, but I also remembered how naive I had been as a freshman. I did not take into consideration the kind of hardships I would face and now that I am a bit older and wiser there are several things I want all freshman to keep in mind in their time during high school: take your grades seriously.
The reason why academics is so important during this time is because you are just starting out. It can be overwhelming being in a new school surrounded by new people. There are tons of things to experience that will leave you with memories that you will take with you throughout your life. On the other hand, having a solid foundation in your grades will help you in the long run. Keeping up with your grades, setting goals for grade point averages, and goals for schools courses will help you succeed even more in school. No one ever told me to think ahead when it came to grades or school. As a freshman in high school my main concern was finding friends to hang out with and then hope that my grades would just fall into place. Planning for college was the farthest thing on my mind, but now that I am finishing my first semester I know that I made my road harder to travel. Had I given myself that foundation I needed I would not be in the financial mess that I am in today.
Finding a place to fit in when you start high school is just as important as making sure you give yourself the academic boost with a solid beginning in school. I regret not taking my studies seriously. I had to work three times as hard to maintain my desired GPA because my freshman grades were not up to par. So I urge younger students, take your academics seriously. Give yourself a head start toward your already bright future to ease the struggle of reaching your goals.
