It Depends. by Brianna - January 2019 Scholarship Essay

Am I a morning person or a night owl? It depends on the day. Some days are promised to be full of pink sunrises and golden sunsets where the sky seems to sing just for you. Some days filled with fresh air, trails built to be roamed on, and cascading waterfalls. Those are the days I wake up at the crack of dawn with a pep in my step and the words “morning person” actively screaming from my wide eyes. When the day is a choice, and I get to choose to live in it, those days are the days that are made for the morning person inside of me. Even when the mornings are slow and I hold a hot cup of tea or coffee in one hand and a book in the other as I overlook the Bellingham Bay thinking about all the good that the day may hold, the morning person inside of me lives for those moments.
Sometimes the sun sets at 11:52 PM over the Alaskan tundra and the dawn of sunrise simultaneously begins as the Nenana River is consistently flowing and the post-work bonfires are never ending. sometimes the conversations with friends are too good to ever end the day by going to sleep so soon. Some days you just want the day to last another second longer so you can keep your eyes open for just another moment hoping that all the goodness in the day will never end because who knows if there will be immense joy the next day. When the day is just too good, then, man, I am a night owl through and through.
My productivity is found where the energy of the day falls. Am I excited about all that the day will hold? Then, without a doubt, I am a morning person. Or am I still thriving off all the unexpected fun that the day has held? Then, oh boy, call me a night owl, and I will be awake until 6 AM doing the things that set my soul on fire. I could never pick just one personality when so many moments of every day are so different.
