Enrichment through Studying Abroad by Brianna - November 2017 Scholarship Essay

Studying abroad is an opportunity granted to a very privileged, small group of students. If I was given such an opportunity, I would leap at it because it would allow me to explore global cultures, provide me teachers I wouldn't have otherwise, and challenge my communication skill set.
From a young age, I have always wanted to travel the world, and I have had a few opportunities to travel within the United States. However, as a college student I am on a journey of self-discovery. My college education would be more diverse through a study abroad opportunity because it would feel like I am in a brand-new world, yet the beauty of that is I am still on Earth. This exploration also expands into global cultures. As a communication major, I am required to take a course in culture and/or diversity. I am currently enrolled in such a course, but I do not see how I would apply that information before graduation in any other way than to travel abroad during my remaining three years of college. To do that would make me more thankful and motivated to be a college student.
In addition to adding diversity to my undergrad studies, travelling would provide me teachers I wouldn't meet if I don't study abroad. I take a lot of pride in my studies and find myself enjoying classes even if most consider them boring. Teachers aren't just people with a set of credentials; they're human beings who teach us their facts about the world as they know it. They're people to work with to create and nurture a wide, joyous, and complex world. Teachers are children, teenagers, adults and the elderly, families and friends alike. Their guidance can only add enrichment to my college education, making me a more well-rounded individual than going to a California State University back near my hometown of Red Bluff, CA.
Most importantly, studying abroad would challenge my communication skills. I am learning how to effectively communicate to other people in my life, and I want to apply what I am learning, especially my nonverbal communication. After all, I am continuously told that certain nonverbal gestures have different meanings in different cultures. However, I am a stickler to the Principle of Verification; don't believe what is said until there is proof supporting the claim. I am a shy and reluctant person, but communication barriers are a challenge I tackle enthusiastically. Each day I feel as though I am gaining more confidence in my abilities, and it's time to put that to the test.
Having a study abroad opportunity comes with many positive impacts to the education to college students all over the world. For me, this would be my chance to enrich my world. I can only grow from studying abroad, finding the culture I identify with, meeting teachers as well as becoming one, and contributing to this world through my communication attunement to others.
