Planting the Seeds of Compassion by Briana - August 2024 Scholarship Essay
Compassion flows through my veins—a fleeting feeling of the world when I was younger. As I grew older, I began to wrestle with the question of why the world seemed to lack the kindness I had always valued. I realized that much of what I had accepted as normal didn’t align with my core beliefs. This realization was a crucial turning point, leading me to see the importance of standing up for what is right and fostering a more just society.
This insight sparked my interest in law, not as a means to financial success, but as a way to protect others and challenge the cruelty I saw around me. I want to pursue a career that allows me to advocate for those who need it most, making the world a safer and more compassionate place. To prepare for this path, my next educational goal is to continue my already in motion plan of leading a Model UN club at my school.
I believe that understanding global issues and the art of diplomacy is crucial for anyone who wants to make a positive impact. By founding a Model UN club, I aim to foster a space where students can engage with complex international challenges, develop critical thinking skills, and cultivate empathy for different perspectives. This club will provide my peers and me with a unique opportunity to explore the world beyond our immediate surroundings, fostering leadership and collaboration—qualities essential for anyone committed to making a difference.
Starting a Model UN club is more than just an extracurricular activity for me; it’s a step toward my long-term goal of pursuing law and advocating for compassion and justice. I am eager to take on this challenge, knowing it will help me and my peers develop the skills and understanding needed to stand against the injustices we encounter, both locally and globally.
