Remember Who You Are by Briana - November 2014 Scholarship Essay
Freshmen year of high school is one of the most exciting, nerve-wracking, life changing experiences. There are a million thoughts running through your mind as you’re walking through the doors on the first day of high school. Between trying to remember how to get around the school, how much more difficult the work is bout to get, to what will the teachers be like, and the scariest thing to face, the upper classman. To help ease the minds of the freshmen, there is a lot of advice that can be given. Honestly, I believe the most important is to stay true to you.
As a freshman, one of the things going through your head is fitting in. It’s a new school, with new people that you’re not familiar with. Everyone worries about fitting in but what people do not realize is that everyone fits in somewhere, no matter what. Naturally, you will find friends with common interests by getting involved. Participating in various activities whether it is sports, clubs, volunteer work, after school activities, there will be someone who enjoys those activities as well. So no if your first day of high school does not go perfectly planned, don’t sweat it. You will fit in perfectly as will everyone else.
There is no reason to act different from the person you truly are when coming into high school. It does not matter if you are trying to impress a teacher, your classmates, friends, or a crush because in the end they will all come and go. At the end of the day, the week, the year, the only person who you should have been trying to impress is yourself. Focusing on how to better/ maintain your grades, how to keep yourself happy, what do you want your future to look like; these are the valuable things in life. Those are the things that will keep you up at night if they’re not up to your own expectations, not who your next boyfriend/girlfriend will be, not who your friends with, not if your teacher personally likes you or not. Focusing on self-happiness is the most important thing in your life. Knowing that as a freshman will only help better yourself no only in those four years of high school, but forever.
Being yourself and focusing on being happy is the most important thing in the world because you are the key holder to your own happiness. Which is why all incoming freshmen should be told this. As a freshman you probably are not thinking about your life like this because you haven’t been exposed to enough of the world yet. With a little advise taken from someone whose been there, this will hopefully help new high school students get a little understanding of the world before they really get to experience it.
