Community Health Education by Briana - February 2013 Scholarship Essay

My chosen college major is Community Health Education. I chose this major for multiple reasons. I suffer Junior Rheumatoid Arthritis. There are a lot of precautions I take so that my illness doesn’t take over my life. I learned of these precautions through public health promotion and community health education programs offered by local hospitals and health centers.
My uncle is a paraplegic from a motorcycle accident. I believe health promotion is very important in this case because he goes through a lot when it comes to his health. He is very uneducated when it comes to his disorder; therefore he is constantly getting urinary tract infections and abscesses. If he was more educated on the severity of his condition, he may take better care of himself which would result in a healthier lifestyle.
My grandfather, who is now seventy-two, suffered a heart attack when he was thirty-nine. He is now healthy due to the fact that he is educated. He takes precautions, such as keeping a healthy diet so that he keeps his cholesterol low to avoid another heart attack. He had quadruple bypass surgery, and he doesn’t want to go through that again. Attending public health seminars on heart diseases and disorders motivated him to take control of his health and lifestyle.
I believe community health educators are necessary, so that the world can be educated. The result of health education is a healthier society. I would love to be able to contribute to the health world and promote health. Living a healthier lifestyle would make a lot of people happier, whether society realizes it or not. Achieving full mental, emotional, and physical health is a goal I have for myself and others around me.
