The Potential Benefits of a Community Service Class by Breyonna - June 2025 Scholarship Essay

If there was an elective or extracurricular activity that I believe should be considered as a mandated class that is required to be taken by a student during their educational journey, I would want that to be community service. Community service is voluntary assistance and or work that someone does in order to help a community of people within a specific area. Examples of community services include: tutoring, bake sales, construction, planting gardens, park and ocean clean ups, animal care and many more. Community service allows for people to make a difference in their community in a variety of ways as an individual and as a large group. When someone partakes in the extracurricular activity of community service, it can allow for them to gain a new perspective of the world around them and develop a better understanding about specific topics of interest, conflict and problems that require solutions. This allows for them to have consideration and empathy towards others as they make an effort to make a difference in their community by offering their assistance. With their participation, it’ll encourage the development of new skills and lessons taught that may be unfamiliar to them as they see it from a perspective that is outside of an academic environment. Community service allows for an array of opportunities to become available and useful for their future such as developing networking, team working and communication skills that can be used both inside and outside of the workforce, gaining volunteering and professional experience, the ability to develop a growth mindset from new experiences, and a build a feeling for responsibility and independence that can increase over time. By working with others, everyone has an opportunity to make a significant impact on their community by providing their assistance and being beneficial to those in need. I believe by having the extracurricular activity of community service to become a required class that a student must take, it can help them develop skills and form connections in an array of areas outside of the skills taught and developed in academic environments.
