All in good time by Brett - January 2016 Scholarship Essay

One of the primary struggles of students tends to be a lack of time management skills. It may sound boring and spur of the moment decisions make life more exciting. True, but it also makes life a little harder when we forget to include proper planning. You can't just leave on a trip and expect to be provided for constantly by the good graces of people alone. Somebody has to plan things in order for a better experience. As student council president at my college, it is my job to organize events and to examine the responses of the student body. Utilizing proper time management skills helps not only the events but myself in the long run. Doing this helps make my job as council president a lot simpler.

During my time at college I've had the privilege and opportunity to be apart of several leadership positions at my college. From campus security, to residential assistant, to student council president. However during these times of leadership I have also worked jobs and attended school full time. I've worked everything from three jobs at a time just to make sure I had the resources I need while attending college, and making sure my leadership position is living to it's job title and expectation. Yet during these times my time management skill has been lacking in my life which causes my grades to fluctuate and me to forget when I have things scheduled down. It also causes me to lose sleep, because I end up playing catch up during the late nights in order to finally get everything figured out and back to it's original position. So much that I landed myself into a study skills class to better sharpen my routine and get control of it.

During this time I've learned that one of the most important skills is proper time management and organization. Instead of wasting hours online or in conversation, having proper time management skills allows me to get the work done that needs to be done. There are twenty-four hours in a day and if I cannot utilize at least one of those properly then there is a problem. Since this academic semester has already began I was sure to make sure to start it off correctly. I have a calendar marked down with all of my student council plans for the semester, as well as my class schedules and assignments. Within the first week I have already found an improvement in my academic life and schedule. I have finished homework well before it has been due and my assigned reading along with it for class dialogues. Completing all of these things in an orderly manner gives me time to spend with students once all of my responsibilities are accomplished and I don't have something stressing me in the back of my mind. My sleep schedule has improved as well since now I can go to bed at a reasonable hour as well as wake up at one.
I have also found the time to utilize additional hobbies and have been able to begin writing and drawing again without wasting any time, as well as working out again. Overall time management is such a small thing that is overlooked, but such an impactful tool to implement into one's life. For anyone struggling and feeling like there Isn't enough time in the day, I would highly recommend sitting down and scheduling everything out and sticking to it. Allowing yourself time to accomplish work, time for yourself, and anything else you would like to add in. It's all in good time, so make use of it.
