Caring for the Lost by Brennen - July 2016 Scholarship Essay

Not knowing where you are going, who you are about to meet or what is going to happen when you get to a new destination is something that can drive a person crazy inside. When the person just so happens to be five years old getting on a bus without either of your parents with you can create a feeling of anxiety that has never been felt before. Sometimes you just have to trust that your parents love you and know what is best for you. When I got off that bus I met my favorite teacher ever and a person who showed me how I should treat everyone around me, her name was Mrs. Ralph.
I went to a private school which was located roughly thirty minutes away from my home. The school building happened to be an old church that only had forty kids in the whole elementary school. Mrs. Ralph was sixty four years old with the enthusiasm and excitement of someone thirty years younger. She taught four grades, kindergarten through third grade. When I arrived to school on the first day I was crying for the first few minutes because everything was new to me. As soon as Mrs. Ralph saw me she grabbed me and gave me the biggest hug, and from that moment on I realized that everything was going to be okay.
There were many instances that year where Ms. Ralph showed love, patience and kindness to a nervous and fragile child who was learning the ways of school. Whether it was spending extra time teaching me how to read or introducing me to other school children to make friends with. The lesson I learned from her is that being compassionate can brighten someone up and it makes them trust you as well as within themselves. Sometimes people just need a hug and someone there for them to make them realize that things will be okay, she gave me that attention. Now I feel that my job is to do the same to others who are having a rough time, it makes for a better world around us. Not a day goes by where I don’t think about all the good times that I had in elementary school and wish that I could relive that excitement if only for a moment.
