Altruism by Brenna - December 2021 Scholarship Essay
Notable leaders in history include Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill. Though these leaders are different and unique in their own ways, they all have one thing in common: altruistic morals.
Altruism is the belief or practice of selfless concern for the well-being of others. A good leader should not take the role for their own thirst for power, but rather to help people. An effective leader puts the needs and desires of their people before themselves. This describes an altruistic leader, and is the key trait to best describe a successful leader.
When thinking of a leader, I want someone leading me who values my wants and needs. I want to know that they genuinely care about me and will do whatever they can to make my desires a reality. I don’t want a selfish leader, who’s only concern is their own well-being. A self-centered leader will only have their own interests at heart, and not care about their people. As a result, the people will be underrepresented, ignored, and alienated.
Altruistic leaders are willing to make the sacrifices necessary to help their people, even if it means putting their own life at risk. These leaders are highly regarded by their people, and are shown unwavering loyalty in the face of adversity and opposition. When imagining the ideal person to lead me, I want to be led by an altruistic individual who I know truly cares about me and my welfare. Not only do I hope to be led by an altruistic leader, but I also hope to become one myself, and others alike should strive for an altruistic mentality. Through altruism, the world can change into a better place, one where people work together to help each other in peace and harmony.
