Sixth Grade by Brenna - January 2020 Scholarship Essay

A tiny sixth grader, baby faced and easily frustrated, I viewed the room of computer banks with apprehension. I hated technology, the frequent blips and issues I ran into. The concept of a semester of a computer-only class, and many more to come, at that, made me want to cry. I made it through the class, and many more after, and only with the hours of struggle before a glowing screen have I learned how valuable computer knowledge has become.
In a world quickly adapting to technology, education must keep up. I have pursued a highly nontraditional education, and throughout the entirety of my experience, I have been supported by the use of computers and immersive education in the use of emerging technology. Without the years of experience before a computer, I would be practically useless when it comes to working with anything beyond pencil and paper. I have been lucky enough to take two multimedia classes, in which I learned graphic design, website design, and what it takes to explore the internet for resources. Even in classes that don’t necessitate computers, such as a fine arts course, I have learned new programs and been forced to adapt to new situations. I have had ample opportunity to explore coding, and have fallen in love with spreadsheets from the chances to use the Google suite.
Sometimes I am still that little sixth grader, staring at a buffering screen and wanting to scream, but the chance to push through these opportunities has ultimately become invaluable.
