Will to Power by Brenda - August 2013 Scholarship Essay

Brenda LawWill to PowerThe most interesting lesson I have learned from a course was from philosophy. In my Introduction to Philosophy course, the lecture that drew my attention most was a theory from a philosopher, Nietzche. Nietzhe believed everyone and everything are driven by the will to power. Will to power means everything that anyone does is to ultimately acheive the goal of gaining power. This theory was so interesting to me because after the lecture I began to notice the accuracy of this theory. Everything people did was to achieve something higher and greater. People generally want to get a promotion to be at the top of the workplace, and people usually go to school to gain a great education that'll lead to a good paying job. It amazed me that things we do, are in fact for the ultimate goal of gaining more power. Even the purpose now for my applying for a scholarship is to gain power. The reason I want a scholarship for school is so I can get educated and become successful, resulting in more power. The lesson from the philosophy lecture was so interesting that it was at the end of the course that I realized I wanted to study more about the behavior of people. I declared my major as sociology because I learned that I was interested in the way people and groups behaved, thought, and more. The lesson I learned from the philosophy lecture of the will to power still continues to amaze me to this day at how accurate it can be. I was so impressed with Nietzhe's theory that I was able to finally decide what I wanted for my future and I'm going to work as hard as I can because of my will to power.
