#edufirst by Breann - April 2018 Scholarship Essay

I have always been very passionate about my education. I feel confident that education is the key to all the success to come in life. Unfortunately, I am the first in my family to have this strong faith in education. This June, I will be the first of my family to graduate high school.

At age three, I began living with my grandparents due to my parents’ drug problem. I was lucky to have grandparents who were willing to take me in. My parents knew their addictions were wrong, and they tried rehabilitation. Unfortunately, they only got worse and later were incarcerated. Soon after, I watched my aunt and uncle drop out of high school during their senior years. I knew from that early age I would never follow in their footsteps. Watching my family members make mistakes has only made me want to succeed more.

I knew that committing myself to my education was my best opportunity to ensure that I did not repeat similar mistakes. This June, with all of the odds against me, I will receive my high school diploma. I will not just stop at high school, I will continue to further my education. This fall I will be attending Shawnee State University for an associates degree in dental hygiene. I also plan to obtain my bachelors degree in Health Science.

My education will help me to achieve my goals and dreams. Becoming a dental hygienist is my dream, and I can’t wait to begin college. I know it is not going to be all fun and games; it will come with a lot of hard work -- hard work for which I am ready. I am so motivated about my college education; this scholarship will not go to waste if it is awarded to me.

With putting my education first I have been on a path to achieving my educational and my career goals. All of the reasons I just recently shared are the many reason I have put my education first. I believe that all students should put education first. If students did, there would be an amazing change in the world. Education is the key to anyone's success, they just need to use it. #edufirst
