Remembering by Brayden - January 2024 Scholarship Essay

The graves of the people in my small town in rural Alabama are so interesting. Every year, in December, my Trail Life troop sponsors several wreaths for Wreaths Across America. We come out in out uniforms and listen to family members tell about their past military heroes. Then we take wreaths to the gravestones. This helps the people remember their loved ones and feel pride for their service to out great country. Many died in battles throughout the past century.
I take this opportunity to read the headstones as I walk through. I learn about people who served and when and can guess which wars they were alive during and which wars they likely served in. I once saw one who was alive during 3 wars!
I love that Wreaths Across America gives us this opportunity. The announcer last year mentioned that many people never visit their family grave sites and Wreaths Across America gives them peace that someone is there laying a wreath and reading their stone and thinking of them. It brings them comfort.
I feel this contribution to the community does more for people inside their hearts than anything. Everyone can see the wreaths, but the people who passes are being remembered and though about and their family members know that. I find happiness in bringing them peace and joy during the Advent season.
