Washington by brayden - October 2016 Scholarship Essay

If the roles were reversed and I became the one giving the knowledge to the students and not a student receiving the knowledge from the teacher I would choose to teach math. Throughout my high school career I have taken five math classes, all year long classes. I have taken Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, pre calculus, and accounting. Through those many days of math lessons and practice sheets that all lead up to a cumulative test it is a very scarce occurrence for the teacher to give out a lesson that deals with real life application.

As a student in the learning environment it is very difficult to keep up the persistence and motivation to keep working through the new and continuously more difficult material when you're never told how the new tools your learning can and will be used in life after schooling.

If I was put into the shoes of a math teacher I would open the eyes of my students by giving them real life applications. The students would learn, not only the necessary skills needed to complete the guidelines for the class, but how the skills they are using would be beneficial in the workplace. They would learn what jobs and careers would use which set of skills and why it is important to be efficient in that area of study.

By doing so this it would help better equip each student as an individual to enter into post secondary education or enter straight into the work force. Students would have a better grasp and understanding of what direction they want to go with their lives and what career path they are interested in perusing because they would know more about what careers entail what types of skills would be used on the daily to be the best at what you do.
