Passion and Purpose: My Journey to Special Education by Brannen - February 2024 Scholarship Essay
It was a cozy evening at home, and I was immersed in the pages of the book "Wonder" by RJ Palacio. Initially, I wasn't interested or excited about diving into this novel. I was only reading because it was recommended to me by my mother. It seemed more of a chore than a hobby that someone should enjoy. However, things took a turn immediately. When I began to flip through the pages, I was instantly drawn to its compelling story. As I curled up on the couch, savoring each word, I was transported into the world of Auggie Pullman, a young boy born with a facial deformity but maintaining a remarkable spirit. The story unfolded before my eyes, evoking a wave of emotions that I had not anticipated. It was a captivating experience that opened my heart and transformed my perspective on how others who may appear "different" can be treated. Little did I know that this literary journey would ignite a passion within me for making a difference in the lives of individuals with special needs.
After reading this book, I wanted to learn how I can personally make a difference in my community and positively impact those with disabilities and differences. The book motivated me to seek out any opportunity I could take to help in my community. After searching for opportunities to make an impact, I willingly volunteered at a local therapy clinic for special needs children. I also decided to volunteer at the Special Olympics, helping these children have an unforgettable experience. By helping with these events, it has had a profound impact on me. Through these experiences, I witnessed the incredible resilience, strength and joy that individuals with special needs possess. Interacting with these amazing individuals has taught me the power of empathy, patience, and understanding. It has also ignited a deep passion within me to advocate for what is right and promote a more inclusive community. These experiences have shaped my perspective, strengthened my commitment to making a difference, and inspired me to pursue a career where I can continue to find support and uplift individuals with special needs.
By dedicating my time to helping those with special needs, I have become more aware of specific situations within my school. One person in my grade has autism and is often ignored and avoided because he is seen as "different.” Inspired by the previous events, I made it my mission to welcome him into my friend group and make him feel included in our school. After learning how amazing of a person he is, we started to spend more time with him and even took him to get ice cream for his birthday. With the help of a few of my friends, we also campaigned for him and got him elected to the homecoming court. I have enjoyed spending time with children with special needs and making them feel included.
With these valuable experiences, I am well prepared to dedicate my time at a University to achieve a degree in special education. I desire and long to continue my passion for helping others in my community feel equal and included, no matter their circumstance. I am eager to learn from and contribute to my peers and professors within the special education field.
