A More Positive Change by Brandy - July 2018 Scholarship Essay

Do you want a positive student body president who can move the school in a more positive
direction? I would like to be your next student body president so I can do that. Because I am
approachable, dependable, and enjoy working with people to resolve problems, I feel that I would be an
effective student body president. Good leadership is important in more than just one way. Being
encouraging, accepting responsibility for my actions, and setting examples by actions, are three good
reasons why effective leadership is needed for a student body president. First, people don’t want
someone as a leader who is critical and makes them feel like they don’t do enough. That’s why I feel
that giving personal encouragement would help me lead in a positive direction. I love to help others see
the best in every situation. Secondly, by taking responsibility for my own actions I am able to minimize
the number of complaints and arguments coming from others. This creates a more productive
environment, which allows more positive things to be achieved throughout the school year. Lastly, I feel
it is very important to have a leader who can set good examples for the student body. This is important
because as a student body president I can serve as an example of what I’d like to see happening
throughout the student body and school. Being encouraging, accepting responsibility for my actions,
and setting an example are three very important traits that I have, which will make me an effective
leader.
Another reason I would make a good student body president is my approachability. I have a
welcoming personality, I am open to constructive criticism, and I am a good listener. First, having a
welcoming personality is great because it allows others to feel less afraid of informing me that they may
feel opposed to me in some way. This leads me into why it’s also important that I am open to
constructive criticism. I understand that I’m not always right and that I may do things wrong from time
to time. I want others to feel that they can come to me no matter what in order to assure that things
get done well. Finally, being a good listener helps me hear what’s going on around the school and what
others may want to see changed. I understand that others might have better ideas that can help the
school, of which I may not be aware. That’s why I feel my approachable personality would make me a
good candidate for student body president.
Lastly, having realistic ideas and expectations is an important trait because it keeps me from
making empty promises to the student body. I want to focus my time and effort on the ideas that are
realistic enough to be accomplished. Understanding that not wasting time on something we simply
don’t have a budget for allows me to have a more productive year by focusing my time on achievable
goals. Having expectations that are either too high or too low can cause projects to crumble or not get
started at all. Consequently, I want to make sure that as your student body president I can promise you
things that are realistic in order to have a more productive year.
In conclusion, the reasons why I would make a positive student body president are that I am a
good leader who is approachable and dependable, making our school year goals more achievable. I
hope I deserve your vote!
